My daughters birthday is coming up and peer pressure is a hard thing to deal with.
I had an elementary school teacher who used to tell us..."better a live chicken then a dead duck"...and that's my parenting philosophy in a nutshell, better safe then sorry. I'm a protective mother and Bean is going to have to get used to it because sometimes there's just no way I'm giving in.
This coming Friday Bean turns 11. What does she want for her birthday...a DSi. thats a Dual-screen internet capable nintendo gameboy system [handheld]. NOPE! She wants to be able to access the internet anytime, anywhere...with no supervision? I don't think so missy. Oh...she's not neglected, she has a DS it's just not internet capable and her friends are getting the DSi...'hello peer pressure'.
Yeah I know about the internet security blocks...but my daughter's smart and I'm not taking the chance that she's more computer savvy than I am. Can she unblock her internet access? Truth is I don't know but I'm erring on the side of caution...I'm gonna be a live chicken so my daughter doesn't end up a dead duck.
And while I'm on a rant, here's one for ya...You don't need to keep up with the 'neighbors' that's whats got america into the finacial mess we're in now! Start teaching your children when they're young that material items should not define who they are!!! What happens to your child if you fall on hard times and can't buy them 'name brand' clothes and shoes? Is that all your child is...a label? or do they have character, morals and values to pull them through having t wear thrift store jeans?
Yes...'things' are nice, and we buy plenty, but we buy what works for our household...not what's popular or 'in' with our family and friends.
When we built our home five years ago we bought a new T.V., it's a 27" color T.V...gets all the same channels that the 'big screens' get, and it fits our room and our budget. At the time we got alot of sass from family and friends because we didn't buy a 'big screen'. We said so what...it's not like our small T.V. only shows half the picture or leaves out every third word the actors say. Besides for us it was an upgrade... until then we'd had a 19", which we still use in our basement, funny thing...it plays the entire movie too, just like the big screens. We show Bean by example that keeping up with others isn't necessary.
So, what's bean getting for her birthday, I don't know, she's as bullheaded as her mother...she wants the DSi...and she's not getting it...and she's not naming anything else...so maybe cash in an envelope...at least that'll be the right color. Bye for now, T.
